2024 Changes to Pro Product Packaging
Frequently Asked Questions for Posit Customers
What's changing?
What’s changing?
We’re introducing three new product tiers for our professional products, called Basic, Enhanced, and Advanced. These tiers include different features, number of server activations, and pricing than our current product tiers (currently called Base, Standard, and Enterprise).
We’re also changing the way we license Named Users by allowing our customers to purchase predefined User Packs to provide flexibility for any budget while reducing the need to spend time on mid-year procurement cycles and rigorous auditing.

Why is Posit making these changes?
As a Public Benefit Corporation with over ten years of growth, it’s our responsibility to ensure that the way we package and license our products best serves our customers, our employees, and the community at large. We aim to provide pricing and packaging for our professional products that encourages organic growth without requiring exhaustive monitoring and auditing of license usage, creates internal consistency that scales across all environments where our customers use our products, and simplifies pricing to maximize transparency.
We enlisted the help of a third party consultancy who collected data from hundreds of Posit’s customers and prospects and directly interviewed over two dozen of them to ensure these new license tiers created consistent, simplified pricing that aligned with our customers’ goals. During this review, we discovered several inconsistencies and disadvantages present in the way our previous license tiers were organized, which we’ve aimed to address with these changes.

How do the Basic, Enhanced, and Advanced product tiers differ?
The new Basic, Enhanced, and Advanced tiers differ according to the number of named users and the features available in each product.
These new tiers are designed to serve teams of all sizes. Our Basic license tier includes all the things that data teams using Python and R need to get started building and delivering data products in production. Enhanced is designed for larger teams and those who need enhanced features like load balancing / high availability, pass-through authentication, and custom branding, among other capabilities. Our Advanced tier provides our most scalable and secure solution for large organizations and enterprises operating in regulated environments, deploying Posit products for multiple discrete business units, or deploying data products in Kubernetes.

Named Users and User Packs
How many Named Users can I purchase for Posit Workbench and Posit Connect?
We’re introducing predefined User Packs to provide flexibility for teams of any size while reducing the need to track and restrict usage to an extremely granular level, as well as reducing lengthy mid-year procurement cycles.
Our customer research tells us that User Packs help accommodate smaller customers and price-sensitive customers who need to account for every last license purchased, while also giving larger customers with less predictable usage patterns and user populations the flexibility to grow without having to go through a procurement process several times per year. Many of our customers liked how licensing Named Users made it easy to track usage and justify the budget for exactly the licenses they needed, but others with less predictable usage patterns found it frustrating when they needed to purchase additional users midway through the year, or needed an option to deliver data products to large numbers of anonymous users.
This change means you might not be able to purchase exactly the same number of users that you purchased last year.
For more information on available User Packs for your subscription, please contact your Posit Customer Team.
