Announcing the 2024 Shiny Contest

We’re excited to announce the 4th Shiny Contest!

We have been in awe of all of the Shiny community, and we are very much looking forward to seeing what the Shiny community comes up with this event.

It officially kicks off today, and the deadline for submission is Sunday September 15, at midnight (anywhere on earth).

You can submit your entry for the contest by filling out the form at pos.it/shiny-contest-2024. We strongly recommend getting your submission in well before the deadline so that you have ample time to resolve any last-minute technical hurdles.

There is no limit on the number of entries one participant can submit. Please submit as many as you wish!

Requirements for the contest are the same as before:

Data and code used in the app should be publicly available and/or openly licensed.
Your app should be deployed on Posit Connect Cloud (how to deploy a Shiny app on Connect Cloud), or similar publicly accessible hosting service. Here are deployment recommendations for Shiny for Python and Shiny for R).
Your code should be in a public repository.

Criteria for evaluation:

Apps will be judged based on technical merit and/or on artistic achievement (e.g., UI design). We recognize that some apps may excel in one of these categories and some in the other, and some in both. Evaluation will be done keeping this in mind and it will also take into account the narrative on the contest submission post. We recommend crafting your submission post with this in mind.

Awards:

New developers. We’ll have special recognition for developers new to Shiny.

Shiny for Python v1.0 was just released and we’ve been impressed with the diverse set of new applications you’ve come up with. Shiny has always been a flexible platform, from rapidly prototyping AI apps to a wide range of business and scientific applications, it’s impressive to see what the Python developer community can build. We are therefore recognizing separate prizes for R and Python Shiny apps this year.

teal is a framework for building Shiny apps, particularly popular among life scientists in Pharma. For this contest we are collaborating with the teal package team to recognize exceptional Shiny apps made with teal.
