Posit’s mission is to create open-source software for data science, scientific research, and technical communication. For years, we’ve been dedicated to paying our engineers to develop open-source projects like RStudio, Shiny, Quarto, the tidyverse, and more. We are proud to deepen this commitment by joining the Open Source Pledge, a public declaration to invest in and sustain open-source ecosystems that underpin modern innovation. By taking the pledge, we reaffirm our role as stewards of open-source innovation and reinforce our promise to the open-source data science community.

The pledge requires that we spend at least $2,000 per developer, of which we currently have 1341.

We considerably exceeded this amount because, in the last 12 months, we contributed more than $493,000 to open-source projects and organizations, an investment that equates to a bit over $3,600 per developer.

Our major donations were to foundations:

We also gave $78,000 to individual contributors to support projects like R Markdown, pandoc, curl, and jsonlite. Finally, we supported a number of smaller projects through GitHub sponsors (totaling $29,000) and the Open Source Collective ($3,200).

Joining the Open Source Pledge is one step in our journey, and we encourage other organizations to take this step with us. We will continue to foster new partnerships and engage with the community through workshops, forums, and events that bring people together to collaborate, contribute, and learn. 1. This is probably a slight overcount since we included all full-time employees in our open source and engineering departments.
