Introducing Posit AI for Positron and RStudio

You've probably tried using a general-purpose AI chatbot for data analysis at some point. And it probably worked — until it didn't. The issue isn't capability. It's context. Browser-based tools can't see your loaded packages, your dataframe schema, or the specific error you're staring at. So they generate responses that are plausible in the abstract but wrong for your actual project. For exploratory work, that's annoying. For production analysis, it's a real problem.

Posit Assistant closes that gap.

Because it lives inside RStudio and Positron, it has access to your live session — your data, your packages, your environment — and uses that context to give you responses that are accurate to your project, not just statistically likely to look right.

Here's a closer look at what we'll demonstrate on April 29:

  • Posit Assistant: Ask it to reshape a dataset, debug a function, or explain what a plot is showing. It reads your environment first, then responds — no copy-pasting, no tab-switching, no hallucinated package names.
  • Next Edit Suggestions (NES): A quieter capability that works in the background. As you type, NES anticipates your next move and surfaces inline completions — contextual, unobtrusive, and based on what you're actually doing in the session.

Both are part of Posit AI, now in RStudio and Positron.

If you work in R or Python and you care about AI that doesn't introduce new sources of error into your analysis, this session is worth an hour of your time.
