Posit AI is now Posit AI Pass
This year at Posit, we released a couple of exciting new AI tools and services that transform how data analysts work. Posit Assistant is our agentic data analysis assistant for Positron, RStudio, and beyond. Posit AI is a separate, optional subscription to commercial and open-weights AI models that can power Posit Assistant, along with many other model providers.
But if you’ve ever typed “Posit AI” (the subscription) when you meant “Posit Assistant” (the agent), you’re not alone. So have we — in internal Slack threads, in support tickets, and occasionally even in our own marketing. It’s a small mix-up, but the fact that it kept happening signaled to us that we got the name wrong.
So we’re updating it. Posit AI is now Posit AI Pass.
Why “Pass”?
A pass gives you access to something, like permission to board a plane or ride a ski lift. That’s fundamentally what Posit AI Pass does, too. Your Posit AI Pass gives you access to a lineup of AI models chosen specifically for data science work and compatibility with Posit Assistant, for just $5 your first month and a low, transparent cost starting at $20 per month after that.
What’s new
Whether or not you've been watching closely, both Posit AI Pass and Posit Assistant have kept moving this year.
Posit Assistant is now the default AI experience in Positron, replacing the older Positron Assistant and Databot, and it runs the same way in RStudio and from your terminal. Next Edit Suggestions, which are intelligent code completion suggestions that appear as you type, are now available in both RStudio and Positron. Auto mode makes Posit Assistant work more autonomously, and Cleaning mode audits your data and surfaces cleaning decisions for you, the expert. If you want a record of an exploratory data analysis session, the EDA Log turns your conversation into a structured summary of what's been explored and what you found, now available in Positron. And many more changes are landing every month.
Your Posit AI Pass now goes further than a single model family. Alongside Claude models from Anthropic, you can now choose from several open-weights models that cost substantially less per token, including GLM 5.3 and GLM 5.3 Flash (Z.ai) and Kimi K3 (Moonshot AI). Now you have even more choices to pick the model that fits what you're doing, whether it’s a frontier model for large, complex analyses, or something cheaper and faster for a quick answer.
Instead of a free trial, new subscribers now pay $5 for their first month and $15 in usage credits. Requiring a credit card at sign-up helps keep Posit AI Pass sustainable for the data scientists and analysts who use it.
What isn’t changing
After your first month for $5, Posit AI Pass still starts at $20/month. This base subscription gives you a transparent monthly credit allowance to power Posit Assistant with a variety of suitable models, as well as unlimited Next Edit Suggestions. RStudio and Positron remain free, and you can even use Posit Assistant with them by bringing your own model provider, no Posit AI Pass required.
Get your Pass
If you’ve been waiting to try Posit Assistant in RStudio or Positron, there’s never been a better time to get started.
TL;DR
Posit AI is now Posit AI Pass. The first month costs $5 with $15 in credits, then it starts at $20/month. You can now choose open weights models such as GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3 alongside Claude. RStudio and Positron stay free, and you can use Posit Assistant with your own model provider without a Pass.
