Hansel Palencia
Manager of Data Science at DaVita International
Hansel Palencia, MSc, is the Manager of Data Science at DaVita International working on data-driven initiatives to support patient-centered kidney care globally. He leads international teams to design and deploy automated clinical intelligence functions that drive improvements in clinical quality, medical outcomes, patient safety, and exploratory research across multiple countries. These data products include custom internal packages and Shiny dashboards built using R and SQL, the InterStellar Framework, a proprietary measurement system used to assess and standardize kidney care quality internationally, and rule based systems that leverage patient safety data to detect multiscale patient outbreak events in real time. He has particular expertise in establishing strong data governance and harmonizing disparate data sources into systems that empower and streamline workflows for clinical teammates. Hansel works closely with clinical stakeholders to build machine learning models and produce clinical research, such as studies comparing Hemodialysis (HD) and Hemodiafiltration (HDF). His work makes it easier for international clinical teams to proactively intervene and continually advance evidence-based practices.
Hansel completed his BSc in Data Science at BYU-Idaho. He then earned his MSc in Health Data Science at the University of Exeter, UK. He is deeply passionate about improving the patient experience, as well as continuous learning, communicating value, and the power of incremental progress to make a large impact in healthcare data.

Data Community Manager at Posit, PBC
I'm a data science educator and community builder who wants to help you cultivate a community of practice for yourself. I talk a lot about the benefits of making genuine human connections, the power of vulnerability, and why we all benefit when we show up as our whole selves. I'm also the host of the Data Humans podcast where my motto is: data science is not one thing.

Community Manager at Posit, PBC
I love connecting people across the data science community to share what they're accomplishing with data and help others do the same through community discussions, industry meetups, and more.
